Derek Yates writes for the Eye blog

‘A new academic year is an opportunity for anyone who works in education to re-assess what they do and why they do it, writes Derek Yates. The past twenty years’ cosy myths about art and design education are being blown apart….’ So starts a piece that FdA Course Leader, Derek Yates recently wrote for the blog of the influentialGraphic Design journal – Eye.

A Lecture from Design Studio

We invited James Greenfield, Creative Director at Design Studio to visit Camberwell today as part of the Undergraduate Visiting Practitioner Programme. Design Studio have grown from 2 to 42 staff since 2009, extraordinary considering that many other agencies have contracted during the same period.

There are obviously some real lessons here for design education and James talk did not disappoint. Here are some of his words of wisdom: Tweeted from @altshiftual:
> 'success is about changing through what you learn. you need to build relationships in order to develop the confidence of a client – thus help them help you do good work.'
> 'learn to use short form video!'
> 'software is not important! more important is learning how to show & direct an idea.'
> 'designing for a mass market is where you really focus & test yourself! READ! not only Eye Magazine but everything even the tabloids – you need to understand this audience as well.'

Two of Design Studio's interesting projects can be found here:
Nokia/ JBL wireless speakers – stunning sound visualizations using Processing & Nokia 'Just Below the Surface' – connect with culture, create culture

Jake's Book of Street Art

First year FdA Illustration tutor – JAKe, has recently produced an insiders view of contemporary street art and graffiti from around the world. It’s called JAKe’s Mammoth Book of Street Art and it’s published by Constable and Robinson. It’s JAKe’s second book this year – illustrated the graphic novel – ‘Hellraisers’. 'The story of four of the greatest boozers of all time: Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Peter O’Toole and Oliver Reed. Robert Sellers and JAKe deftly weave the four stories seamlessly into one fast-paced adventure of drunken binges, orgies, parties and fun.'
