'Beauty in the Making'

Special thanks to Chrys Livings, friend of the FdA and advisor at GF Smith paper for helping organise our visit to the 'Beauty in the Making' show in Bloomsbury on Friday 27th April. Highlights included Eric Gill's original drawings for Gill Sans and some beautifully functional paper samplers designed by Madethought

Carl Angelo shortlisted for Hyper Island!

Earlier this month, we featured Carl Angelo’s submission as part of the selection process for Hyper Island. He was told this week that he had got through to the final stage! He will fly out to Sweden in the next few weeks for a final day of interviews – good luck Carl, we will be thinking of you!

FdA Alumni Week 2012

During the week beginning 23rd April, several graduates from the FdA returned to Camberwell to talk about their experiences. Pleasingly, these students painted a very positive picture that seems to indicate that our philosophy of work based learning and industry collaboration seems to provide a good foundation for finding employment.

Adam Barclay

Adam met John Jeffrey, one of the partners at Bibliothèque at the FdA show in 2009 and started a placement there very soon after. He now works for them as a junior designer and talked current students through his involvement in some of their most recent projects with clients such as the D&ad, the Design Museum and new telecoms brand Ollo.

Liam Weyell

Liam graduated in 2009 and now works with ex FdA tutor, David Breen, at branding specialist, SampsonMay. He took current students through his work while on the FdA and described how this prepared him to work in the world of annual reports, corporate identity guidelines and branding strategies.

Patrick Fox

Paddy graduated in 2008 and is the studio manager at the international publishers, Faber & Faber. His talk provided students with a wealth of information about designing book covers and the factors that contribute to the design process within the contemporary publishing industry.

Kyle Platts and Tom Slater

Kyle finished the FdA in 2010, before bridging to the BA. In the last year, he has been tipped by NoBrow as one of the rising stars of British comics. With fellow graduate Tom Slater, he talked current FdA illustration students through life after Camberwell and some of his freelance commissions for clients such as Computer Arts and Vice Magazine along with the production of a graphic novel for NoBrow.

Who’s Designing The Future?

Friends of the FdA, ICO Design were talking at the Cheltenham Design Festival on the 20th April – so Course Leader, Derek Yates, tagged along as part of Russell Holmes’ entourage! Russell and business partner, Steve Lloyd, talked about the effect of social media on contemporary communication to a packed house and joined a roster of speakers that included Paul Priestman, Simon Waterfall, David Hillman, Sir John Sorrell and Adrian Shaughnessy.

Hyper Island

After the FdA, second year student, Carl Angelo intends to continue his education at the Swedish digital design school, Hyper Island. Hyper Island 'offers creative learning experiences in all things digital'. Education based on life long learning and real industry needs' and very much reflects the FdA ethos of industry collaboration and work-based learning.
