Tatiana augments reality

Since enrolling onto the FdA in October 2011, Tatiana Alisova, has taken full advantage of every opportunity that the course has given her. At the end of her first year she conducted research into the future of children’s book illustration and this research inspired a project that allowed her to develop a series of interactive illustrations for the Owl & the Pussycat.

Find out more about the project here.

FdA students go Loop de Loopy!

As part of the FdA professional platforms series, Rob Grieves ran a series of animation workshops. Rob has spent 10 years working as an animator in London & Sydney for clients such as Canal Plus, Channel 5, Cirque do Soleil, Engine, the History Channel, ITV,  LOCOG, Madame Tussauds, Moving Brands, MTV, Natural History Museum, Samsung, UKTV and Unilever. Rob worked as a Senior Animator on the London 2012 ceremonies. He was part of the team that created the 'audience pixel content' - the animation in the Olympic Opening and Paralympic Closing ceremonies that was displayed around the stadium. This technology used 'pixels' placed on each seat to turn the stadium into a living animation. Rob’s showreel can be seen here

Working with Rob, FdA students created a series of animations that are being showcased on the LoopdeLoop website.

LoopdeLoop is an animation challenge. Each month, animators from around the world create looping animations based on a given topic and upload them to www.loopdeloop.org. On the last Tuesday of the month all of the posted loops are compiled and screened to a live audience at Loop in Melbourne, Australia. During the screening a winner is declared, who enters the hall of fame and has their loop featured throughout the following month.'

Here are some of the FdA entries – their theme was BANG!

Derek Yates writes for the Eye blog

‘A new academic year is an opportunity for anyone who works in education to re-assess what they do and why they do it, writes Derek Yates. The past twenty years’ cosy myths about art and design education are being blown apart….’ So starts a piece that FdA Course Leader, Derek Yates recently wrote for the blog of the influentialGraphic Design journal – Eye.

A Lecture from Design Studio

We invited James Greenfield, Creative Director at Design Studio to visit Camberwell today as part of the Undergraduate Visiting Practitioner Programme. Design Studio have grown from 2 to 42 staff since 2009, extraordinary considering that many other agencies have contracted during the same period.

There are obviously some real lessons here for design education and James talk did not disappoint. Here are some of his words of wisdom: Tweeted from @altshiftual:
> 'success is about changing through what you learn. you need to build relationships in order to develop the confidence of a client – thus help them help you do good work.'
> 'learn to use short form video!'
> 'software is not important! more important is learning how to show & direct an idea.'
> 'designing for a mass market is where you really focus & test yourself! READ! not only Eye Magazine but everything even the tabloids – you need to understand this audience as well.'

Jake's Book of Street Art

First year FdA Illustration tutor – JAKe, has recently produced an insiders view of contemporary street art and graffiti from around the world. It’s called JAKe’s Mammoth Book of Street Art and it’s published by Constable and Robinson. It’s JAKe’s second book this year – illustrated the graphic novel – ‘Hellraisers’. 'The story of four of the greatest boozers of all time: Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Peter O’Toole and Oliver Reed. Robert Sellers and JAKe deftly weave the four stories seamlessly into one fast-paced adventure of drunken binges, orgies, parties and fun.'
